One of the scholarship recipients said;

“The closer I get to my degree, the further I get from being able to meet the costs."

That was the impetus for the Enhanced Scholarship, a scholarship that could help students for more than one year.

Our Story

After the Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor was founded in 1996 it started awarding one-time only scholarships to high school seniors.

We believe education is vital in building a strong foundation in one's life and this is especially true in the development of our future generations of leaders. We want our youth to be educated, to be up to date with current issues, and able to provide knowledge to the next generation.  Education is an important building block to a stronger and healthier community.

How rewarding it has become to hear the recipient’s excitement and eagerness at the beginning of his/her life’s journey.

Since I was a little girl, I’ve dreamed of becoming a doctor…

However, many of our budding scholars came back seeking more funds to assist them with the growing costs of higher education for their sophomore through their senior years.  Seeing the need and having the strong commitment and dedication, our early Marblehead Harbor Rotarians developed a long-range plan to build a permanent scholarship fund that would enable us to provide full scholarships to the blossoming leaders of our community.  A very bold undertaking for such a small group.

We’re not afraid to dream big and set gutsy goals…

In 2006, The Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor Enhanced Scholarship Trust was born to develop and grow our annual contributions to the point where we can offer full scholarships.

While we are still growing our fund, we are now able to offer multiple year or enhanced scholarships to our young students.

As we focused on education and developing leaders in our community, another scholarship need became dishearteningly apparent. People already in the work force who would like to improve their employment opportunities by increasing their skills or core competencies often need financial assistance to take those courses or certificate programs.

I’m a working mom, living paycheck to paycheck…if only I had some extra money to take a course, I could get a promotion…

To meet this need, the 2nd Chance Scholarship was developed.  This scholarship is for certificate programs, courses, or other classes meant to improve skills and core competencies, but is not for college degree programs.

With tears in her eyes, she thanked us taking a chance on her…

We love helping people help themselves.  We love building our community.
